This project builds on lessons learnt from previous pilot projects tackling obesity. Upbeat Families offers free ten-week course of physical activity and lifestyles education for overweight and obese children aged 3 – 15 years and their families. Delivered in communities, 2-hour weekly sessions would include Family Games Time’, Parent’s and Children’s ‘Lifestyles Classes’ and ‘Physical Activity Sessions'.
Also provided is a service for new mothers suffering from post-natal depression and obesity. Over 20 months, 1500 Calderdale residents will benefit from the project (750 adults and 750 children). 75% will be from the Park, Skircoat, Ovenden, Illingworth and Mixenden wards. The project will aim to reduce the families BMI by 5%, increase family activity levels, improve quality of life and increase children's self-confidence.
